The competition site sits on the western part of the Depot. The Museum will be placed partly in the existing buildings there, partly in newly built structures.

Keeping some of the 1960s buildings is practical, as the halls are perfectly suitable for storing and presenting the collection, besides they are also outstanding examples of post-war industrial architecture. Their transformation and expansion will create a unique, characteristic environment for the new Museum, shaping its identity from historic and newly built components. A former canteen building, later housing the first workers’ cultural hall in the country (still operating as a cultural centre), a Cold War bunker, and the office building attached to the Diesel Hall are under heritage protection.
